Auditor Mining Museum offers its visitors the experience of an object within an object, a synthesis of the extractive living history of the mining industry in Montana. On the site of Butte, Montana’s first hard rock headframe, the Original Mine, this project rises as a monument to the pride of Butte’s community and the rich, complex history of its genesis.

The namesake of the project, Auditor the “strip-mine dog,” was a hearty dog who lived by the shores of the Berkeley Pit in Butte for 17 years. Miners looked after Auditor, providing him food, shelter and water when they gave up attempts to take him away from the pit. Auditor’s resilient legacy and warm hearted embrace by the city is a meaningful representation of the strong community that comprises Butte, America.
